Handwash Sensors
These sensors help monitor handwashing patterns within your facility. Place them under or on soap or sanitizer dispensers used frequently by staff to track the number of times the dispenser is used for handwashing or sanitizing.
When adding a handwash sensor to a room in the Hygiene IQ app, you can set an hourly target for each room with a sensor. (For instructions, refer to the How to Edit Room Details section.) If the hourly target is not met, you will receive a notification through the app. Notification details, including the room name, date and time, and the actual washes count versus the target, will appear on the Tasks page.
Whenever a handwash sensor detects a wash, it will record the action and add it to the total wash count. The sensor will flash green twice to confirm that the wash has been recorded. The system will then calculate the total number of washes per hour for each room and send a notification if the actual washes fall below the target.
⚠️ Important Note: You will only be notified if the hourly wash target is not met. If the target is met, no notification will be sent. However, the total wash count will still be displayed on the Tasks page under the Actual Wash count, shown on the right side of the wash compliance performance indicator.
How to set up a Handwash sensor
To activate a sensor as a Handwash sensor, follow these steps:
- Unbox the sensor, remove the back cover, and pull out the battery tab. Insert the battery and replace the back cover. Wait for the blue LED light on the top cover to start flashing rapidly.
- In the Hygiene IQ app, scan for the sensor by tapping ACTIVATE SENSOR during location or room creation.
- If adding the sensor later, tap Add Device in the room page and select Add Sensor.
- The app will scan for nearby sensors—select the detected sensor to activate it.
- After the sensor is activated, the app will transition to the Sensor Settings page. Tap the dropdown menu in the Select sensor type field and choose Handwash.
- Next, assign the sensor to a dispenser frequently used by your staff. Enter the dispenser’s name in the Which dispenser to monitor? field by tapping the field and typing the name.
- After naming the dispenser, define how the sensor will detect a handwash based on the dispenser type:
- Distance: Select this option if you have an infrared (IR) dispenser. When set to Distance, the sensor will be activated whenever it detects hand movement near the dispenser.
- Vibration: Select this option if you have a pump-type dispenser. When set to Vibration, the sensor will be activated whenever it detects the vibration caused by the pump motion of the dispenser.
- Peel off the adhesive tape cover on the back of the sensor and attach it securely to the dispenser it was assigned to.
- Add a photo of the sensor in the app by selecting the Add Photo button (optional). Choose one of the following options:
- Take New Photo – Select this option to take a picture of the sensor with your mobile device.
- Select from Library – Select this option to choose a picture of the sensor already saved on your device.
- Tap Next to complete the sensor setup in the Hygiene IQ app.

- Choosing a selection results in a full page refresh.
- Opens in a new window.
